What are RTA Cabinets?

RTA cabinets, which stand for Ready-to-Assemble, are flat-packed cabinet pieces that are shipped to the customer. The customer is responsible for assembling the cabinets themselves or hiring a professional installer. Purchasing RTA cabinets allows you to achieve high-end cabinetry without the high-end cost. The savings come from the reduced expenses for the cabinet supplier in creating pre-built cabinets.

Ordering RTA cabinets is not only better for your budget, it can also increase the lifespan of your cabinets. Shipping them flat-packed helps maintain the integrity of the cabinets and reduces the risk of damage compared to pre-built cabinets, which can shift during delivery and sustain damage.

RTA Construction: MDF vs Particle vs Plywood

MDF

MDF is an engineered wood chosen for its lower cost. While affordable, it comes with some challenges. MDF is heavy and has reduced screw-holding strength, which can affect the quality of your cabinets over time. Daily wear and tear may cause parts or even entire cabinets to need replacement. MDF cabinets also require additional support during installation due to their less sturdy structure. Standard MDF can swell or break down if exposed to water, making it a less ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms.

Particle Board

Particle board is another engineered wood selected for budget-friendly projects, especially large ones. It is lighter than MDF, which can make installation easier. However, particle board also has limitations. It is sensitive to moisture, has reduced screw-holding strength, and has limited repair options. These factors contribute to a shorter lifespan compared to plywood or hardwood.

Plywood

Plywood is made from alternating layers of wood veneers, giving it enhanced strength and stability. Known for its excellent load-bearing capacity, plywood performs well for cabinet boxes, shelves, and heavy countertops. Unlike MDF and particle board, plywood offers better moisture resistance, superior screw-holding strength, and versatile finishes. Because of its higher quality, plywood cabinets have a longer lifespan and hold up better to daily use. While plywood may cost more than MDF or particle board, it is still cheaper than custom hardwood cabinets and is a smart choice for extending the life of your kitchen.

What is a Veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer applied over engineered wood on the door and drawer fronts to create a specific look or style. There are two types of veneer: a thermofoil and a real wood.

Thermofoil a vinyl layer that can peel or warp when exposed to high heat, such as from ovens or dishwashers. It cannot be repaired and has a limited lifespan compared to real wood veneer.

A real wood veneer is a thin layer of real wood that gives cabinets a natural wood appearance without the high cost. Real wood veneer allows for lighter-weight cabinets while maintaining a consistent grain finish and is often the preferred choice for cabinet buyers.
